Orion Research Foundation grants for 2024 can be applied for between 1 August and 10 September 2023

Grants are designated to support academic research for Finnish medicine, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, and natural sciences related to those, such as chemistry and physics according Orion Research Foundation’s rules

  1. for researchers with a doctorate (completed with thesis defense in the five calendar years running up to 10 September 2023 *), for continuation of research (maximum EUR 50,000) and
  2. for young scientists without a doctorate, for scientific research (maximum 
    EUR 6,000).

Grants are designated to be used as a personal grant or to cover other research expenditure. 

Research abroad or establishing one's own research group with the greater grant is appreciated. Applicant shall attach the engagement letter from place of performance abroad for research of post doctorate grant.

Apply by filling in the electronic form at The application form is to be filled in using Finnish, Swedish or English. The Foundation does not take additional attachments or recommendation letters into account. An applicant may receive greater grant of maximum EUR 50,000 once and smaller 6,000 grant a maximum of two times.

The Farmers' Social Insurance Institution (Mela) handles the statutory earnings-related pension and occupational accident insurance of those receiving a grant or scholarship from Finland. Recipients of scientific grants and scholarships are considered as customers of Mela (read more here).

The grant application period is between 1 August and 10 September 2023. It is not possible to make changes to applications after they have been submitted. The decisions on grants will be published towards the end of 2023 on the Research Foundation’s home page. The grants will be paid out in January 2024. *) By completing the degree of specialist, specialized dentist, or specialized veterinarian or for other special reasons (such as maternity, paternity, parental or nursing leave, conscript or non-military service or long-term sickness) applicant may extend the period of five years to maximum seven years. Applicant shall give clarification for surpassing the deadline of five years in CV (Curriculum Vitae).
